Good God, it’s just like having your uncle buggering about with his camcorder at Christmas… Main pic: You’ve Been Framed time with Thom Yorke under the baleful gaze of a Cantonese TV crew in Hong Kong.
Right, from top: Jonny experiences the magic of Chromakey on the flying carpet ride in the Mitsubishi Bldg, Japan, June ‘94; A Cheery Thom does the signing thing in Japan; Yet more cathode hell in Hong Kong; and bassist’s eye view of the glory that is Glasto!

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE, SYDNEY BAY, JUNE 1994.
Colin: “Oooh, that’s a nice picture.”

JONNY ON THE CARPET IN JAPAN’S MITSUBISHI BUILDING, JUNE 1994.
Jonny: “Me and Ed went to one of these technology-can-be-fun theme parks for children. One of the exhibits was a magic carpet ride. The guide treated me like a child as well. She kept on telling me to move my hands to make the magic. I agreed to wear the waistcoat but there was no way I was putting on the big turban.”

ED PISSING ABOUT IN FRONT OF SOME MIRRORS, AUSTRALIA, JUNE 1994.
Ed: “This was in a hotel room when I was completely pissed, trying to simulate the can-can infront of some mirrors.”
Colin: “It’s more Tommy Cooper than can-can though, isn’t it? He was in the bathroom for about two hours doing this. Truly a moment of tour madness.•

A BLUE CATERPILLAR IN JAPAN, JUNE 1994.
Colin: “You can’t print this. We’ll get angry letters from insect lovers all over the world.”
Thom: “What the bloody hell is it?”
Colin: “It’s Ed prodding a large blue caterpillar. He was obviously having one of his David Attenborough days.”

RELAXING IN A SAKE BAR IN JAPAN, JUNE 1994.
Ed: “This was a very, very drunken evening in Japan. By the end of the video we started singing folk songs into the camera.”
Thom: “The guy with his thumbs up is called Hiro. He’s our record company man in Japan. He always won at drinking games. And he always had his thumbs up.”

PHIL ENTERING CUSTOMS IN NEW ZEALAND, JUNE 1994.
Thom: “That thing that the guy is holding are some wind chimes that we bought in Bali airport.”
Phil: “I thought that was a didgeridoo.”
Jonny: “It’s some posters we brought it with us from Spain.”
Thom: “Well, whatever it was, the customs guy didn’t like it.”

BAND PICTURED WITH GOLD DISC, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 1993.
Phil: “This was the day when we were given the gold discs, and then they took them back – so they could give them to us again in Los Angeles. There was quite a lot of bullshit like that.”

THOM LOOKING COOL WITH SOME SUITS, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 1993.
Thom: “The guy on the right is Jim Fifefield. He’s so powerful. He’s the worldwide head of EMI records. You can tell he’s powerful because nobody ever makes comments about his crocodile shoes. The other guy is from MTV. This was a meeting where we tried to persuade MTV to put ‘Stop Whispering’ on heavy rotation. They didn’t.”

ON THE HYATT’S ROOF, LA, JULY 1993.
Jonny: “Twenty years ago, the Hyatt used to be famous as the hotel where all the big bands stayed. Now everybody just knows it as that place where they filmed Spinal Tap.”
Thom: “In America we had, on average, about one photo session a day. So no matter how tired or hungover you felt you still had to try and look fairly presentable. This may have been one occasion where we didn’t succeed.”
