Colin: "When we were doing The Bends, John Leckie told us about this hollow earth theory that John Power of Cast has. Apparently, there's a sun revolving in the centre of the earth and there are holes in the north and south poles that aliens fly into. We, er, weren't completely sold on it to be honest, John."
Thom first worked on 'The Hollow Earth' with Nigel during the sessions for The Eraser, but the song remained unfinished at that time.
In late 2008 or 2009, work on the song was completed. On September 3rd 2009 Thom made a posting on Dead Air Space and announced the release of the song for september 22nd 2009 on a 12" vinyl single, backing 'Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses':


The song had its live debut on October 2nd 2009 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles at the first gig of Thom's then unnamed band, consisting of himself, Flea, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco:
