Interviewer: "Ed, I thought your show had something of a triumph, here?
Ed: "Yeah, it was... I tell you, today and tonight and yesterday in Torhout was fantastic. It's a really great line-up, you know? I think of all the festivals this summer, this is by far the strongest line-up. And it's great to be playing with bands we've never met, like the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers – who are on the stage now - and one of them, Flea, comes up to Thom yesterday and goes “Hey, I'm a big fan” and like... you don't expect that!
Interviewer: "I saw the whole of Massive Attack standing there; I saw a Greg Dulli standing there...
Ed: "Oh, yeah. Massive Attack, we know them but... I think all the bands are really good, but my personal favourite is Massive Attack... and it was great – I met Greg Dulli earlier today and he's a really nice bloke. So yeah, these kind of things are quite cool!
Interviewer: "Does that still charm you, after all these years?
Ed: "Oh, yeah, totally! I mean, when you're a fan? It's weird for us, in a way, because it's quite good that this line up is over two days – the same line up – ‘cause, like, yesterday everyone was a little bit shy and kind of like “shit, there's Flea or there's Greg Dulli” or whatever, and today everyone's just kind of like “Yeah...”, you know? It's cool.
Interviewer: "It's a strange thing – you have two albums and yet your set seems to be a greatest hits set.
Ed: "[laughs] Well you know, when you come to these festivals I think what you have to do is... we played ‘Creep' tonight, we didn't play ‘Creep' last night. And the thing being that you have to remember that there are 18 year-old people, there are 24 year-old people who've never heard you play ‘Creep' live, they may have it on the radio or on the record, and it's kind of important to do songs that people are familiar with. Nevertheless, we played two, three new songs tonight and that's important for us – to keep us on our toes.
Interviewer: "They sounded very good; they sounded very Radiohead-like.
Ed: "[laughs] Well, that's good!
Interviewer: "I think it's very strange – you include three guitar players, you play guitar music, but still – your music is about emotions and layers of emotions; and it must be quite tricky to make those layers come out live?
Ed: "Yeah, it is tricky, and particularly when you're trying to do different things all the time. We don't.... I hope we don't... I mean, I think there's a ‘Radiohead sound' but we don't rely on... you know, a lot of bands have one sound, one kind of tempo and we don't try and do that. So, it is kind of tricky, but we've played together as a band for eleven years now, since school (we were a school band) and I think that really helps. There's an understanding of... there are definite roles within the band, people do certain things. That definitely helps.
Interviewer: "Ed, you're a great guy....
Ed: "[laughs]
Interviewer: "...and I think Radiohead is the best fucking British band alive! Here they are with ‘Creep'. Thanks a lot!
Ed: "[still laughing] Thank you very much! Cheers! All right, thanks very much! See you, bye.
