Aliya-Jasmine Sovani: And for Radiohead, why is it important for you guys to get the message out about changing your carbon footprint or saving the planet?
Colin Greenwood: I don’t think it’s about saving the planet; I think it’s just about trying to carry on living you lives, but trying to modify them to a certain extent, you know. The best way to improve the carbon footprint is to not go on tour at all and not to travel anywhere and stay at home and…
AJS: Which is impossible for you to really do it.
CG: But then you sort of negate your existence then. So um and we’re just trying to look at ways of reducing it as much as possible. And um by shipping our gear rather than flying it.
AJS: That’s what I was going to ask. If you choose your venues accordingly?
CG: Yeah, just all these kinds of things and saying you can’t do it sometimes and sometimes you have to compromise and then other times you have to, you know, you manage, you work with promoters who across the whole tour can make big energy savings, but once, a couple of places people might have to drive out of town, you know?
AJS: Right.
CG: So just lots of things like that, really. Just try and, you know, if you can’t completely cut it out, then try to be aware of it and try to make a framework that you can tour within, that you can still do your thing.

AJS: Is LED like eco-lighting?
CG: It’s like, LED, it’s light emitting diode. It’s like, you know, it’s a form of lighting that’s, uh, consumes less energy, but it can be very bright as a light source, so all our stage lighting is a hundred percent LED - the entire show.
AJS: Do you notice a difference?
CG: It’s nice to play in because it’s like a nice sort of ambience on stage because when you play with normal rock shows, you have like light projecting like strong beams and things and it’s quite hot. And um, it’s quite fierce and stuff. And this lighting is much more ambient and it’s really - I read a review from an American reviewer, for the light show, said like um, “the fortress of solitude. Which I thought was really cool because of the Superman reference and stuff, you know. Sort of all the icicles, you know.
AJS: Kind of like um the kryptonite haven.
CG: Yeah, that’s right, yeah. Yeah, it’s actually been quite cool.
AJS: One thing that we’ve learned from the past is that Radiohead sets the trend, so hopefully this is one that will continue. Thank you so much, Colin.
CG: Thank you. Was that ok?
AJS: Yeah, it was perfect. Thank you so much.
