[Pyramid Song]
Sook-Yin Lee: "We're in Oxford, England, hometown of Radiohead, one of the most innovative bands in rock and roll. They're a group of musicians that refuses to be lulled into artistic complacency; within two years they will have release two albums, the groundbreaking Kid A, as well as their latest Amnesiac. We're going to head to the outskirts of town to meet up with front man Thom Yorke in a studio.
[Pyramid Song]
Thom: "So no eye contact then.
Sook-Yin Lee: "Huh?
Thom: "No eye contact.
Sook-Yin Lee: "What do you think? What do you think of that idea?
Thom: "Yeah.
Sook-Yin Lee: "ok. How are you?
Thom: "Are we started?
Sook-Yin Lee: "Yeah.
Thom: "Weird" (laughs).
[Pyramid Song]
Sook-Yin Lee: "What does that reference, Amnesiac?
Thom: (Inhales deeply) "A source of... uhh...
Sook-Yin Lee: "You forgot, didn't you?
Thom: "Forgot what? Oh right. Uhh..." (pauses) "What was the question again?" (laughs)
Sook-Yin Lee: "Amnesiac" (laughs)
Thom: (laughs) "It's all about timing.
[Pyramid Song]
Thom: "Most of the stuff on Amnesiac, is about being trapped in one particular lock, like in your heart or in your head, that you just can't get out of. It's exactly that sort of like... you know the guy sitting in traffic, like when you go drive back to London today, you'll see them all driving the other way, coming out of London. And just look at their faces, you know? It's like fuck, I can't get out of this.
[Pyramid Song]
Thom: "When Kid A came out, I think people found it difficult to make the sort of connection, like between that and OK Computer.
[Motion Picture Soundtrack]
Thom: "All though, as far as I'm concerned it's completely logical, maybe to other people it wasn't and the thing about Amnesiac, having it been done at the same time, is sort of fills in the blanks.
[Pyramid Song]
Sook-Yin Lee: "Do you ever feel confined by your own construction of your own identity of who you are?
Thom: "Musically there was a lot of that going on, I really didn't want to use my own voice. I thought we can still write cool songs and not rely on this guy singing in an emotional hyperbole all the time.
[Idioteque (BBC Sessions version)]
Thom: (continued) "What about 'let's try something else,' it can still be good. Why does it always have to have those elements to it? And in a way it ends up being [that] you can't really explore... you can't really be creative anymore, because that identity thing is getting in the way.
[Idioteque (BBC Sessions version)]
Sook-Yin Lee: "Big deal in your life is that you had a baby boy. Noah. Is that right?
Thom: "It's chaos in a little bundle.
Sook-Yin Lee: "What is he like?
Thom: "What's he like? Well apparently he looks like me, poor soul.
[The National Anthem]
Sook-Yin Lee: "Are you surprising yourself in terms of parenting skills?
Thom: "Oh, I'm absolutely rubbish at the moment.
Sook-Yin Lee: "Really?
Thom: "Yeah.
Sook-Yin Lee: "How so?
Thom: "Well I don't know. I think he wants his mommy" (laughs)
Sook-Yin Lee: "You just got to get one of those Japanese inventions.
Thom: "Yeah, I'm sure, yeah. Well basically I need to stink of milk, so how ever that can be achieved.
Sook-Yin Lee: "You can gets those Japanese things, where it's the mens breasts, where it's like a bra and there is milk sacs.
Thom: "I'm just not going to answer the door when on that one really" (laughs). "Especially with a beard.
[Pyramid Song]
Sook-Yin Lee: "Oh, I looked at you.
Thom: "No you didn't. But I didn't look back
Sook-Yin Lee: "Yeah. So after all you're travels of being a rock and roll superhero -
Thom: (Scoffs)
Sook-Yin Lee: "You are -
Thom: "Thats how you start a question, isn't it?
Sook-Yin Lee: "I'm serious though, don't you think you are?
Thom: (inaudible underneath the question)
Sook-Yin Lee: "Are you going to accept that title?
Thom: "Well it sounds good, doesn't it?
Sook-Yin Lee: "Rock and roll superhero, in your travels.
Thom: (laughs)
Sook-Yin Lee: "You go out into the world... and then you travel around and play music... and you are a rock and roll superhero.
Thom: "I love it.
Sook-Yin Lee: "But you always come home here.
Thom: "Yeah.
Sook-Yin Lee: "How come?
Thom: "Well, it's where I left my things," (laughs) "when I left.
[Pyramid Song]
Sook-Yin Lee: "Ok, well thank you Thom
Thom: "We're clear, yeah
Sook-Yin Lee: "Thanks for not looking at me...
Thom: "Thats ok
Sook-Yin Lee: "...are you staring at the back of my head right now?
Thom: "Kind of.
Sook-Yin Lee: "Ok, so should we just end it without looking with one another?
Thom: "Yeah, definitely
Sook-Yin Lee: "Ok.
Thom: "Bye.
[interview ends]
[added bit over credits]
Sook-Yin Lee: "You strike me as a very balanced individual.
Thom: "Yeah that springs to mind.
Sook-Yin Lee: "Thom balance.
