Jonny: I don't know, that's a while ago, I can't remember. We just, we sort of, we got on quite well with Yoav Kutner, and it's just good to get back to the station again.
Host: How did you feel when you first knew that R.E.M. wanted you for their tour?
Jonny: We thought that there must have been another Radiohead.
[laughter]
Thom: Yeah, we thought there must have been a mistake. We only took it seriously when we actually met them and we were at the gig, and there were 50,000 people outside, so we thought maybe this is really happening.
Host: Yes.

Thom: ...don't you think people maybe heard that and went...
[laughter]
Host: I read in the NME, the reporter said it was a song that came out one in a million.
Jonny: One in a million.
Thom: We've got million of them, though!
[laughter]
Jonny: Then we'll have to do a million more, you see.
Host: So do. What are your best memories from the last time you were here?
Thom: I remember, uh, going down to the rocks in front of the hotel, uh, went down to the beach, really, really drunk at six in the morning.
Host: I remember that I used to be the DJ at [?] and you were very sad when you had to leave Israel.
Thom: Hm. It was-
Host: You had a bad mood when you, uh-
Jonny: Well, Israel was the first country outside England to play us, and invite us to play there. So it was definitely, um, it was at the beginning of us. And uh, it's good to get back to Israel because, you know, it means we can sort of, Israel can catch up, and we can do all the new stuff. And they can be at the front again, you know, instead of playing Creep again.
Thom: Listening to Creep again.
[laughter]
Host: What did the people in England said when they heard you were so successful in Israel?
Jonny: I don't- well, Israel is, um...
Thom: You don't remember that far back, do you?
Jonny: No.
Host: It was only two years ago!
Jonny: Yeah, ages! Yeah, um, what do people say? I don't know, as soon as, I mean, as soon as people sort of, um, unfortunately, I think they kind of all talk about America instead, and say, they always say, every interview begins, um "Why were you bigger in America before England?" And we can just say, no, it was Israel actually.
[laughter]
Jonny: Which is a better answer, than America.
Thom: Either way, it's wherever they've played it on the radio, so it's nice and simple, really. Wherever we get played, we're massive.

Host: So, Thom, what will you play?
Thom: Oh, wot, now?
Host: Yeah, now.
Thom: Uh, uh, we're going to play a song called Street Spirit, which is on our wonderful new album The Bends, which doesn't contain Creep.

Host: This is actually the way that you work? This is the way that you-
Thom: Yeah, a lot of time. This little tiny amp that we have here, which is the size of a small shoebox.
Host: Mm-hm.
Thom: We take around everywhere, and Jonny plugs it in, and we write stuff.
Jonny: We wrote Iron Lung like this.
Thom: Yeah, we wrote Iron Lung when we bought that, cause it sounded so amazing.
Host: Besides sleeping and eating and performing while you're on the tour, have you got time to write songs too?
Thom: Yeah, in fact that's when we write most of the stuff we do. Right, we don't actually write much when we go home. Well, we're never at home anyway, so.
Jonny: But it does mean that stuff we write tends to be for two guitars, for quite a long time.
[laughter]
Jonny: But the other song we're hopefully going to play for you soon is um, is been, is just us two. And we've been playing it in concerts like that. We're yet to do it with the drums and everything, so.
Thom: Subterranean Homesick- yeah, as in the Dylan song, but not.

Host: Sal and I, we spoke before that we shouldn't speak in Hebrew near you, because there are some words that you understand.
Thom: Mostly the swear words, isn't it Jonny?
Jonny: Um, a few. Yeah, mostly the swear words.
Host: Uh, which words, for example?
Jonny: Oh, I can't think of any right now. I know a bit of Hebrew, and some Japanese as well. I can do some Japanese if you want?
Host: Oh, okay! Do some Japanese!
