The interview took place on may 27th 1996 after the band had played the Pinkpop Festival.
Interviewer: "Hi Ed"
Ed: "Hello"
Interviewer: "Impressive, very good show"
Ed: "Yeah, I mean its weird seeing it on TV just now because its uh, you don't really get, when you're up on that stage you don't really get a feel for what it's like, you're kind of, you've always got these doubts and like the amps sound different because its outside and you've always got these little niggles and then you see it on TV and its, its quite re-assuring *laughs*"
Interviewer: "Yeah, thats good, ya and actually what I think is remarkable is that your, I mean, with all due respect, I mean you're an unglamorous band..."
Ed: *Laughs*
Interviewer: "...and you see the devotion of the fans is total is 100%"
Ed: "Yeah, its really weird, and again because you're, because of the height you're at on stage, its very difficult to guage the audiences reaction. I mean, for instance when we started the set, we felt that it was, we felt we had to really work hard and it was kinda the only last third of the set we actually sorta relaxed and felt vaguely comfortable about what we were doing."
Interviewer: "Let me just translate shortly" *proceeds to translate*
Interviewer: "Yeah, I talk about the devotion of the fans and so, and the un, the fact that you are so unglamorous as a band, so its just the songs, its the songs right"
Ed: *Laughs*
Ed: "Totally, we're not about glamor no, um, when we were signed as a band, and this was like four years ago. I remember we were being, there were about eight record companies interested in signing Radiohead, and uh, they said so uhm 'whats your agenda? what are you gonna say?'. So we sorta scratched our heads together and it was a bit sorta well, isn't it all about music, and uhm, we've continued to do that I think. The music is the most important thing, we're not a glamorous band. We've you know, to go out on the road for like four years isn't, it isn't a very glamorous thing you know. Like today, it's not a glamorous thing you know, there are loads of mud and stuff like that. It's about music its about putting on a good show, it's about trying to communicate with the audience and hopefully trying to do that..."
Interviewer: "Ya"
Ed: "...So its uhm, ya I mean, we are what we are."
Interviewer: "Ya, let me just translate shortly" *proceeds to translate*
Interviewer: "In England, especially in England, there's a lot of emphasis on, on, uh, attitude or what kind of image you want to project."
Ed: "Yeah, well I mean we've never been sorta the press darlings, we've never sort of, we've never been, there has never been 'Radiohead versus Suede' or 'Radiohead versus Blur' its kinda 'Blur versus Oasis'..."
Interviewer: "Yes"
Ed: "...and we're kind of, we're very happy with that, you know, we're sort of, we live in Oxford, we're out of everything and we exist in our own little...bubble if you like, trying to make great, trying to make good music and first of all trying to please ourselves and then hoping, you know, people will get into it."
*Interviewer Translates*
Interviewer: "It ended in a good way, I mean you made it finally just on the strength of the music."
Ed: "Yeah, we feel as though, I mean we're now really at the completion of The Bends and this is really the last few dates that we are doing for The Bends which we've been touring for about a year, year and a half."
Interviewer: "Thats the new album?"
Ed: "Yeah, well, new, its uh, the second album..."
Interviewer: "Uh hu"
Ed: "...uhm, and ya we feel as though we've gotten to a stage where people accept us for what we are, and we're not, you know when The Bends came out we felt that we had that whole legacy of Creep and the whole legacy of Pablo Honey to live up to. And we just, we feel very comfortable about where we are and, and it bodes well for the next album if it goes well."
Interviewer: "OK, well lets have a look at the last, one more song we're gonna see from you, Radiohead"
*Switches scenes*
Interviewer: "Yeah, pretty good"
Ed: "Yeah, that was alright"
Interviewer: "You said something about the sound"
Ed: "Yeah, I mean, normally when we've done a TV thing or whatever it's very difficult with the three guitars because, I mean, what goes on is people play louder parts at different times and uh, well I was just congratulating you all on what a great job you've done, so"
Interviewer: "Well, I haven't done it but it's the people from the radio statio who've been doing this kind of stuff for years, and yeah, they're actually really good at it."
Ed: "They can come and do the album with us! The new album."
*Laughter*
Interviewer: "I'll tell them, they'll be very proud."
Interviewer: "Thanks a lot for coming"
Ed: "It's a pleasure, thank you very much for having us. Thank you."
