[Welcome to Live! Tonight we have a recording with English Radiohead made at Magasinet in Göteborg on the 4th of June this year. The five-man band Radiohead have lately become very much discussed and raved about in the press, both in Britain and the USA. And this is how Thom Yorke presents his band:]

Thom: "We’re from Britain, uh we uh come from oxford, um, we ah went to school together, uh went off to college like good boys, got an education and decided to do what wanted to do all along which is form the band, um uh signed about a year and a half ago and have been playing um I think we’ve done about two-hundred gigs now um since then. Um, Got an album out, don’t know if it’s out, don’t know if it’s out here or not(yes it is)oh it is, ha. Got an album out here called Pablo honey. Um Which, which is doing quite well around the world especially in America, and quite well in Britain actually. Um getting good press and bad press Um which is gunna be a good thing I think. If you have all good press then you turn out crap."

[The members of Radiohead met at school and decided to form a band when they were at university. About 1½ year ago they got a record contract and since then they have played approximately 200 gigs and also recorded their debut album “Pablo Honey” which came out approximately one month ago here in Sweden. For some reason the band has done very well especially in the USA where the single “Creep” has become a favourite on the college radio. But all reviews have not been positive. “Thank goodness”, says Thom Yorke, “it would only go to our heads”. Radiohead come from Oxford, same city as Ride, but musically there are no significant similarities between the bands. Radiohead do not feel like they belong to the introvert shoegazing school. Instead they want to find a way to play that is emotionally strong, filled with energy and communicative.]

Thom: "It’s, it’s odd actually because obviously coming from oxford we, we had um, ride, the ride phenomena when we are all off, off at college, um ride broke. And I was dj-ing at college and I remember getting the ride record’s thinking oh? alright then. (laughs). And, and like uh I think when, when by the time we got back from college this sort a shoe gazing thing was starting to die down. And um what it was, it was really odd because I think we were kinda like just the complete opposite in some ways because we really wanted to sort of we know we get from real extremes of of sort of emotion and volume and stuff like that whereas like you know um shoe gaze thing was like sort of levels of white noise over and over and over ya know laying, layering and building and building which was sort of, you know, perfectly valid. But we really we always really wanted to be a good live band."

[Well, are Radiohead a good live band or not? You will find out when listening to tonight’s recording. Unfortunately not many people showed up at Magasinet but there was absolutely nothing wrong with what was played.]
