RC: "I'll tell you who our guests are in just a second. Starting out with Everything But The Girl, we heard The Cure, U2 at two, Deep Blue Something, Counting Crows, McLaughlin (check), Pearl Jam, Chris Isaac and Alanis Morissette. I'm Ryan Chase, Radiohead are in the studio right now. Welcome, guys!
Thom: "Morning
RC: "We appreciate you guys dropping by. Warming up for REM tonight, and how's the tour going so far?
Thom: "It's lovely, isn't it?
Jonny: "It's been sterling, thank you
Thom: "Sterling? No, it's good
RC: "Now, come on, come on, everything's going cool? No confrontations or anything, backstage ever?
Thom: "No. None of that at all
RC: "Everybody's getting along, huh?
Thom: "Yes, we play cricket in the afternoon, and er...that's it. And we go on, and people walk in as we go on, so we say “hello” to them
RC: "Well, er...
Thom: "And we warm their audience up for them
RC: "Michael Stipe, did he like hand pick you guys, or what?
Thom: "Yes it was like...he was asking us on a date, or something
RC: "(laughs)
Thom: "His agent called up and said “What are you doing in August, and what are you doing in September?”
Jonny: "And we said...
Thom: "and we go “Errrr...”
Jonny: "Nothing, now
Thom: "Nothing now, yeah, and it's like, you know, what are you doing when you get off work?
RC: "And you're going to follow them basically throughout the entire tour?
Thom: "Er...no, we finish...er...er...when do we finish? Jonny, you know these things
Jonny: "Oooh, in a couple of weeks. It's just really curious to find a band that are still completely obsessed with music and their own music and still into it...
[sound of high pitched feedback]
Thom: "Ow!!
Jonny: "Is that me doing that? Wow, cool!
RC: "You've got to shut the door, guys (laughs)
?? - Sorry about that
?? – Out!
RC: "Well, tonight's the show at the Woodlands, and tomorrow night as well. It's going to be two shows...I tell you what, can you guys hang around and let me play a few things here? We'll come back, and we'll play some tunes and chat a little bit. Is that cool?
Thom: "Oh, alright then
RC: "Alright. Radiohead live in the studio on 104 KRBE
[plays track]
RC: "...in the studio right now. Guys, I love the new CD, it's called The Bends. It's not even that new any more, it's been out a couple of months, but it's still relatively new to Houston
Thom: "Yes
RC: "And I gotta ask you something, I mean this album sounds completely different from Pablo Honey. What was it that brought around the changes in this thing?
Thom: "I think we just changed as...changed in what we were doing. I think, you know, the natural thing is to change, and hopefully progress, and we were just doing that, really, I think, you know. We were just finding out where we were at, really, and we weren't going to do another Pablo Honey. We didn't want to, and there didn't seem any point
RC: "Have anything to do with being on the road and like, you know, developing as a band, or...?
Thom: "Well, hopefully, yeah, hopefully “developing” is one of the words. “Mutating” could be another one...
RC: "Right, I was cracking up during the commercials, we were sitting here and looking at this T-shirt that you're signing, and what did it say on it? It's a little...
Thom: "There's a little label that comes with it from the record company, right...
RC: "(laughs) Yes!
Thom: "One of the quotes is, was it “The Bends proves that Radiohead did not shoot their bolt with Creep”
RC: "With Creep (laughs). Another critic thing. Let me ask you, I mean, do you ever get tired of talking about that song? I mean does it...
Thom: "Yeah, I think we shot our bolt with it, actually
RC: "(laughs) Alright, I've gotta ask you something. What do you think about all these other bands coming from the UK right now? I mean, like almost a new invasion, I mean do you think that's like a valid statement, or...?
Thom: "I think that every time...every time they say “new invasion” it sort of...it reminds me of a sort of image of the Vikings landing on the sea, the East Coast with a couple of wooden swords and stuff, and being eaten alive by Indians...
RC: "Well, when Pablo Honey came out...
Jonny: "Native Americans
Thom: "Hmmm? Native Americans, sorry
RC: "When Pablo came out, you know, it was like...it ever was a big success in the UK before it ever was a success in the US, and I mean does that really affect you guys, like, you know, were you like thinking “god, it would be really nice to have some success in America”, I mean...or did it not really matter?
Jonny: "Well, it's all kind of surreal, because we hadn't intended to release our first album outside England, or even tour outside England, so we just found it getting stretched, and spending longer and longer away from home, so yes, it's just good to get back to solid ground with this I think, with this record
RC: "Cool
Thom: "We didn't really know what we wanted (laughs) That's one of the problems
RC: "What's the make-up going to be like tonight, like when you do your concert? I mean, are you going to be playing like fifty percent off the first album, fifty percent off the new one, or is there just going to be some bizarre jazz fusion experimentation or something, I don't know (laughs)
Jonny: "You've seen us!
Thom: "Yeah, you've seen us! No, you've seen us on a bad day
RC: "Welcome to (Check 04:00) (laughs)
Thom: "Er...Not much jazz, I'm afraid. Mostly...it's mostly going to be The Bends, really, because...um...because it is...because we're only on for forty-five minutes, so we're going to play the stuff, air the new, and we like...
RC: "Would you ever consider just like saying “no, I'm not going to play Creep, I'm not going to do it”?
Thom: "Oh, yeah, we've done that on several occasions, but to us, that's making more of an issue of it than playing it, you know, if you can still play it well, and like...and contextualise the rest of the set in it, then fine, you know, what the hell? I think it makes more of an issue and it panders to the notion of us “shooting our bolt” (RC laughs), if we didn't play it, so I'm quite prepared to shoot my bolt every night
RC: "Alright, I like that answer! I tell you what, I'm gonna do something a little different, because I've actually bought the CD. I didn't get it free...
Thom: "Good lord!
RC: "I went out and bought it...
Thom: "Good lord
RC: "And I like it. The CD is called The Bends, and I'm going to skip to cut three, I was telling you guys off mike that I really like the song High And Dry. Do you mind if I play that one for you?
Thom: "Oh, we'd love it
RC: "Right, this is new stuff from Radiohead, it's called High And Dry, cut number three on The Bends on 104 KRBE
[plays 'High And Dry']
RC: "104 KRBE, Radiohead, the track is called High And Dry off The Bends, and I've got the band in here, a couple of you guys
Thom: "Hello
RC: "I've gotta ask you, what's it like when you listen to yourself on the radio, because I noticed that you were like, you know, really intently listening there, with your hands cupped over your headset and...
Thom: "The reason I was actually doing that was that I can't remember how the record actually sounds because we play it live quite differently from that...
RC: "Oh, really?!
Thom: "So I was kind of concentrating on that really actually, because I haven't really heard it for ages
RC: "And we were chatting in between the song, and I was asking you about what's it like playing these huge, large venues, as compared to when you started out, and doing, you know, some of the smaller...smaller, little club gigs?
Thom: "I mean...huh
Jonny: "Started out?
Thom: "Started out? Yeah
Jonny: "The last gig we played in America was to two, three hundred people in a tiny club in New Orleans
RC: "Oh, so within the last couple of years it's still been...
Jonny: "Yeah, it's still fairly tiny, so...
RC: "So then you jumped to like fourteen thousand...what's the vibe like?
Jonny: "Well, it's terrifying. Venues that are the size where you actually need to get in a little electric golf car to take you to the stage...
Thom: "Yeah (laughs)
Jonny: "It's just terrifying, you know? We offered to walk, but then “oh that would take like ten minutes, you're on”, “oh, ok”
Thom: "It's too far, you've got to get on the car
Jonny: "Very bizarre
RC: "Well, let me ask you something. David Letterman, what's it like doing that gig?
Thom: "We didn't do that one. Which one did we do? We did...
RC: "You did Conan
Jonny: "The Conan one
RC: "You did Conan, that's right, that's right
Thom: "And also we did...oh gosh
Jonny: "And there's lots of make up when you get close up to these people
RC: "Oh, really?
Jonny: "Yeah, that was really funny
RC: "Konin had it like plastered on?
Thom: "Yeah
Jonny: "And all his guests did too. It was all a bit alarming
Thom: "Yeah. Everyone looks so wrecked during the day and then these complete other people (check 06:40)
RC: "And they don't talk, do they? They don't like come up and chat with you when the cameras not rolling, it's just basically silence
Jonny: "Well, when we actually played Creep on their first ever show, our kind of first ever show, and we got to warm up in one of these big boardrooms, and they had this big chalkboard, blackboard that was covered with all their humourous ideas for the series, where they'd obviously had some kind of brainstorming idea of how to be funny, and they'd put up all these kind of amusing comic vignettes...oh dear
RC: "It didn't work too well in Houston, 'cause the show's not on here...in Houston any more
Jonny: "Not really
Thom: "Ooops!
RC: "Alright, well let me ask you one more quick question. After the tour, the next LP, we were talking about, you know, you wanting to go out and be like...would you ever do something like what REM's done, like Monster, the new CD is very loud, electric guitars, would you ever consider just...what the hell, changing sounds again?
Thom: "Yeah...yeah
Jonny: "We're just about to do a year of solid touring. It's fun to play those kind of songs
Thom: "I don't...I've got no idea, you know, I mean if I had my way, we'd all give up playing guitar completely and all play keyboards, because I think guitars are really boring now
RC: "Really?!?
Thom: "Yeah yeah
RC: "Really?!
Thom: "Yeah
RC: "That's shocking to hear from you guys! Well, the album is called The Bends. Pick it up, it's a great album, and you guys warm up for REM tonight, I know you've gotta get out of here, 'cause like you gotta do soundcheck and traffic. Houston, Friday afternoon, you've never experienced it, ok?
Thom: "Oh, I've got a good book
RC: "(laughs) Right, well we'll see you tonight at the Woodlands. Thank you very much, Radiohead. Special live guests in the KRBE studios. Up next, Scott Sparks, and a little information about the show tonight.
