Shaun McCrindle, who shot footage of a Headless Chickens gig, also collaborated with Thom in 1990. "Exminster Grind" is a track he recorded with Patrick Bell, in 1990. It arose from a 'jam' he had with Thom during their first year in university student halls of residence. Shaun McCrindle came up with the semi-tone drone, by de-tuning and re-tuning the E string on his guitar (this was partly inspired by 90s 'kraut-rock' band, Loop). Thom then wrote the chorus chords and melody. Thom and Shaun McCrindle never did anything with the song as it was a one-off collaboration, but Shaun liked it enough to subsequently record it with old school friend and artistic collaborator, Patrick Bell. As Shaun had recently shot some footage in Exminster Hospital - an abandoned mental asylum just outside Exeter - the recorded music became the soundtrack to that video. The hospital was in the process of being converted into modern accommodation and it was the contrast of the vandalised and demented old buildings and the sanitised new 'show homes' that Shaun was interested in exploring.
