Exclusive interview with Colin Greenwood

Hello Colin! Thanks so much for your time and for allowing us to send our questions about the south american tour and other happenings. You can answer the questions here in this text file and then somebody in our team will translate them... Just take your time with them, we're not in a rush. And sorry for the mistakes in the text (our english is far from perfect). Thanks again! and please send our 'helloes' to the rest of the band- radioheadchile.com

1 - This was Radiohead's first south american tour: How was it, experience-wise?

It was over too soon, and I hope we can come back soon with lots of new music, to make up for the lost time. Everyone's kindness, the passion of the crowds, the beauty of the place, really we wanted it to go on and on. When we got back together after coming home, we said we missed it.

2 - What is your main role in Radiohead these days? Radiohead has been around for some time, we have seen different sides of your personality, like being the "official photographer of the band". About that, fans are eagerly waiting for pics taken here to appear in DAS...

Well, I make the tea and coffee in the studio, and laugh at Nigel's jokes, and that's about it. I did take some photographs in South America, but I was trying to shoot in colour, and they didn't come out so well, so I won't inflict them on you. A friend who's teaching me photography told me to take only one camera out, and I took three. He was cross, and I didn't come back with many shots, so my fault there! I think that photographs taken by fans are as good anyway, I'm sure there's a lot of good images out there of the tour taken by people.

3 - What do you think about the audience's energy in Chile's shows?

It was warm and electric and made the shows a success, particularly the first night in Santiago, when Thom had half an hour's problems with his sound. Everyone in the crowd was very patient and very excited at the same time, two states that are hard to combine. We were very grateful, and loved the crowds both nights. I watched the queues for the the shows as we drove into the arena, and wanted to jump out and hang out and meet people, but didn't have time.

4 - Tell us about your mind state at the last two gigs, because we saw you having the time of your life on stage.

My mind was blown by playing after Kraftwerk each night, who are musical heroes of ours and part of the good history of music. Otherwise, just the usual mix of fear, concentration, absent mindedness and elation. It's just such a lovely thing to see so many people in front of the stage, who wouldn't be jumping up and down in excitement.

5 - How did the band feel about playing Creep at every date of this tour, like it was during Pablo Honey’s tour? It was a surprise for anyone that it was the opener on the 27th.

Well, we played it because we hadn't been to South America before, so it seemed good to do it, and I did like playing it first, I think it blew up the rest of the show, especially with the crazy lights.

6 - Was it a surprise to see Radiohead stencils painted on the walls of Valparaíso?

We wanted to go and see the Pacific at the end of the tour, to see the other side of the world before flying back. Valparaiso was lovely, and I have a crazy picture of Thom there I'll put up. Yes it was a surprise to travel so far and see radiohead stencils, but no bigger a surprise than being there and playing in Chile.

7 - Colin, we saw you sporting a new look for this year: Are you going to include the poncho and the hat you brought here?

I have a photograph of me wearing poncho and hat in the cool old shop in Santiago that I don't think anyone would want to see....

I'm keeping the beard for now because I'm forty this year and it goes with the years. I'm going to try and wear more suits though - smart and hairy is the new look I think.

8 - We have read that you've listened to Sepultura, have you heard other latin music/groups? Did you buy some records here?

I like the Mexican Institute of Sound, great, exuberant record. I've also been enjoying listening to some Brazilian Music on the site Brazilian Nuggets.

9 - Changing the subject, you've been in Mexico recently, how do you feel about the news about the H1N1 virus?

I'm glad we got to play Mexico City, it was the best start of any tour, and I hope the virus doesn't affect too many people.

10 - The environment, children's work and slavery, Free Tibet are issues of concern for Radiohead. What are your preoccupations today?

My preoccupations are very family and music oriented.

11 - Let's return to the music part: Is the new tour an extension of In Rainbows tour, like the Latin American one, or is a pre-LP8 tour?

What new tour? We are playing some festivals in Europe in August, after that, it's all up in the air!

12 - And, the last one. This was made by most chilean fans: Are you coming back on the next tour?

Yes Yes Yes. If there is a God of Rock, and I can sway him, then Chile, Argentia Brazil, Mexico, would be the first places Radiohead would come back to. Fingers Crossed!
