No han dado ninguna declaración en toda su gira, tampoco conferencia de prensa, y nosotros fuímos a buscarlos hasta Brasil. Andrés Vial nos trae los detalles de la banda, Radiohead, que se presenta esta semana en Santiago. (Hello! Welcome to a new week here at Platea 24, and let’s start with an interview which is a privilege. They have given no statement throughout their tour, or a press conference, and we went looking for them all the way to Brazil. Andres Vial brings us details about the band, Radiohead, who will be playing this week in Santiago.)

AV: Río de Janeiro fue la puerta de entrada para Radiohead a Sudamérica. Nunca en sus veinte años de vida esta banda había estado en esta parte del mundo. Llevan casi un año de gira derramando su último disco, In Rainbows, sin dar una entrevista, ni si quiera una conferencia de prensa. Hicieron una excepción para 24 Horas en Sao Paulo. Eccéntrico vocalista, Thom Yorke, parte de la band, nos contaron lo que se viene para sus presentaciones en nuestro país el próximo jueves y viernes. (Río de Janeiro served as the front door for Radiohead in South America. In their twenty years of life this band had never before been in this part of the world. They’ve been leaking their last album, In Rainbows, with a tour that has lasted almost one year, without an interview or even a press conference. They made an exception for 24 Hours in Sao Paulo. The eccentric vocalist, Thom Yorke, part of the band, told us what is ahead in their shows in our country next Thursday and Friday.)

AV: Thom, ¿por qué demoraron tanto tiempo en llegar a Sudamérica y también a Chile? (Thom, why did it take you so long to come to South America and also to Chile?)

TY: Why did it take us so long? Um… well, because we always argue about how long were going to be on tour for… and by the time it came we were tired of touring and couldn’t face it. But this time we had a nice fat break. And… actually—to be honest—what tipped it over for me was a friend of ours who was here on tour with The Police and Beck and said ‘you’ve got to come’.

AV: ¿Qué conoces tú de Chile… [points to Ed] Ed, tú también? ¿Qué conocen de Chile: el vino… qué cosa conocen de nuestro país? (What do you know about Chile… [points to Ed] Ed, you too? What do you know about Chile… the wine… what do you know about our country?}

TY: I know you used to have a nasty dictador, who tried to hide in our country. He got put in there as well.

EO: No, we didn’t let him out. Good wine. The Andes, of course. It’s a very extraordinary country: very long and thin.

AV: ¿Qué podemos esperar del show de Radiohead en Chile? (What can we expect from Radiohead’s show in Chile?)

TY: We’re never very good at answering that question. [Laughs.]

EO: [Laughs.] Well, without sounding stupid… [Laughs.]

TY: [Laughs.]

EO: … some of our songs, um… songs from our, you know… We’ll play a lot of In Rainbows songs--we’ll probably play all of them—that’s what we tend to do. And then there’ll be songs from our other six albums.

AV: También, ¿qué podemos esperar del… o qué esperan ustedes, mejor dicho, de los… de los fans chilenos, del show que van a instalar en Chile? (In addition, what can we expect from… or what do you expect, better yet, from… from the Chilean fans, from the show that you will set up in Chile?)

TY: No idea…

EO: Someone said… yesterday--they said—‘cause we met… it was at a restaurant in Rio, and there were these four girls--and they were on holiday from Chile--and I was with Colin eating, and they didn’t know Colin and I were in the band they’re going ‘Are you here for the Radiohead show?’. And we were like…

TY & Ed [in unison]: [nod] Yeah…

TY: [Laughs.]

EO: They said, ‘Oh, we’re really sad ‘cause we have some tickets to the show but we’re on Holiday and we have to give our tickets away’. So [] ‘Do you want to come to the show?’ {Laughs.] And they said that—we saw them afterwards—and they said that Chilean fans are… they said they’re crazy.

AV: Después de la experiencia de In Rainbows—por la venta por el Internet del sistema tan particular que se hizo: ¿Para dónde creen ustedes creen que vá la industria de la música con este tipo de ventas? (After the In Rainbows experience—the online sales in that particular way it was done: Where do you think the music industry is headed with that type of sales?)

TY: Down the []. [Laughs.] Um, I think, um, basically the old, um… the old ‘school’of music business is not going to last, and everybody in it knows it. Um, it’ll be something else… I don’t know what.

AV: ¿Tú crees que los shows en vivo y los grandes toures son la salida que tienen los grupos, las grandes bandas para… para pasar al tema de la baja de discos, y toda la industria, toda la revolución en la industria de la música? (Do you think live shows and big tours are the way out bands have… to change the topic to the music downloads and the entire industry, this entire revolution for the music industry?)

TY: Um... I don't know.

EO: If they’re concerned about money… ‘cause that’s the way to make money now…

AV: Chile fue uno de los países que menos pago promedio por el disco In Rainbows. ¿Qué te parece eso? (Chile was one of the countries with the lowest average price paid for the In Rainbows album. What do you think about this?)

TY: [Laughs.] We didnt judge anybody about it.

EO: [Nods.]

AV: Thom, ¿cuánto has pagado tú por ese mismo disco? (Thom: How much did you pay for this same album?)

TY: Me?! I don’t have to… Oh, I did pay, didn’t I? [Pause.] I didn’t pay anything. I did it ‘cause I had to give it to my Mum and Dad.

EO: I paid 400. I got ten box sets.

TY: Oh, yeah, that’s… okay.

EO: Yeah.

AV: Una pregunta que no es fácil: ¿Qué es lo próximo que viene para… para Radiohead? ¿Qué es lo que viene para el futuro? ¿Qué piensan ustedes de sus carreras? (A question which is not easy: What is ahead for… for Radiohead? What is coming in the future? What do you think of your career?)

TY: I‘ve no idea at all. Um, I don’t really want us to jump into doing another In Rainbows… 'cause it was extremely hard work.

AV: Thom, ¿cuál es tu canción favorita escrita por ti para Radiohead? (Thom: What is your favourite song you wrote for Radiohead?)

TY: Pause. Whatever… I’m finishing at the moment. Um, there’s one called “Dawn Chorus” I’m trying to finish at the moment: that’s really great… I think.

AV: ¿Cuál es la canción que tú hubieras soñado escribir y que sea de otro músico? (Which is the song that you would have dreamed of writing by another musician?)

TY: Uh… um… “Simple Twist of Fate” by Bob Dylan.

AV: Ed, ¿qué significa para ustedes Radiohead? (Ed, what does Radiohead mean to you?)

EO: Um… that’s a heavy question, hmm.

TY: Well, when we went to rehearsals, it’s kinda funny what you said.

EO: Yeah, I think that’s… When we… we had rehearsal about two weeks ago for this tour. And I went home after the first day, and I sat down and I said to my wife, ‘I feel really… I feel really happy! I feel really sort of complete.’ I realized that, you know, a big part of me is what we all do, and so, um—and we’ve been doing it for a long time now--so it’s… it’s a big part of who we are as people, whether we like it or not.

AV: Thom, una pregunta que no tiene mucho que ver con la música: ¿Qué… qué te parece la actual crisis económica? ¿Cómo la ves tú? ¿Cuál es tu opinión frente al tema? (Thom, another question that doesn’t have much to do with music: What… what do you think about the current economic crisis? How do you see it? What is your opinión about the subject?)

TY: I think, uh, that it… it’s an opportunity for us to re-think the way that economics serves the people of the globe, because it comes in context of uh, uh… our last chance to, uh… address the issue of global warming… and consumption, and energy consumption, and we can’t carry on business as usual in terms of the environment or in terms of economics. And I have a big problem with the banks being shored (?) up the way they are.
