On july 2nd 1994 Radiohead played the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. At some point during that day Thom and Jonny played an acoustic set backstage at the Festival for the radio channel P3 and were also interviewed. This is a transcript from an audio recording of the radio broadcast. The broadcast date is not known, but july 1994 is likely.
DJ: "Now you're backstage with us guys, have you ever played in a horse stable before?
Thom: "I played in a pigsty which is almost the same thing and the shit was still there so...
DJ: "Jonny, I've heard that Thom really rocks; he broke his toe on stage kicking his guitar.
Jonny: "Yeah but it sounded good do that's the main thing.
DJ: "You have a lot of different things I've heard you're hard to define and compare Radiohead with anything, Thom, was is a Radiohead?
Thom: "What is a Radiohead? Well, a radio head is a character in 'The Fisher King' that goes in and shots a yuppie in a restaurant after listening to a radio programme, that is a Radio head. Uh... Radiohead generally I don't know, it could be a soap powder really.
DJ: "How would you describe yourself, Jonny?
Jonny: "Uh..same as everyone else only a little bit different... um.. we're English, aren't we? Yes.
DJ: "How about we start with some music, what are you gonna play for us? Can you introduce it yourself?
Thom: "Uh... which one should we do first, Jon?
Jonny: "Street Spirit... .uh... Bulletproof?
Thom: "No let's do the other one first.
Jonny: "Okay.
Thom: "Which is... what's it called? Oh yeah 'Black Star'.
DJ: "You're not good with names, Thom, are you?
Thom: "No or words actually I have to force myself to learn them.
[Play 'Black Star']
Thom: "Thanks.
DJ: "So tell me about the song where does it come from, Jonny?
Jonny: "Which song?
DJ: "The song you just did.
Jonny: "It's infleneced by two things. One being a book by someone called Stephen Hawking called 'A Brief History of Time' and also in the sport of Sumo wrestling a black star is a bad mark put on a score sheet when a wrestler commits a foul.
DJ: "Okay that's two different themes here.
Thom: "Oh they connect though definitely.
Jonny: "Large bodies moving.
DJ: "Where does the magic, when it happens, where does it come from? Who does your lyrics?
Thom: "Mostly drugs.
DJ: "So that's how it happens? [laughs]
Jonny: "Lennon speaks to him...
DJ: "That's where you learn about Sumo wrestling and everything...
Thom: "Yes, Lennon speaks in my dreams.
DJ: "And the next morning you'd have a song ready, huh?
Jonny: "Imogene is one of his.
Thom: "Imogene? Is that one of mine?
Jonny: "Yeah.
Thom: "Alright. I'll get the publishing for that.
DJ: "I won't really believe you when you say you're not good with words, your lyrics seem to be a lot of words in them . Would you mind... .would it be possibly to do an older song from Pablo Honey.
Thom: "Ah! That one...
Jonny: "What should we do?
Thom: "What? From Pablo Honey?
Jonny: "'Thinking About You'?
Thom: "Yeah.
DJ: "Since we're jumping over 'Creep' here... .
Thom: "Uh... how does it go?
[Play 'Thinking About You']
Jonny: "I realized I didn't know that, like one chord in.
DJ: "Jonny, I'm noticing your wearing wrist support, too much guitar lately? You have a bandage on your guitar hand.
Jonny: "Yes, I have an injury that usually 40 year old typist get but I have and I'm 22 so there you go...
DJ: "Because of Radiohead?
Jonny: "Yes, too much typing.
DJ: "How are you doing touring these days, I mean, are you doing a lot gigs?
Thom: "We have been yeah...
Jonny: "We did about 150 last year and about the same this year possibly... probably bit less more recording this year.
Thom: "We've been recording and we kind of felt like going back on the road because being in the studio is getting boring. We've been out in the road for 3 months, I don't know, we've done Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong everywhere basically expect America.
DJ: "Where is the most fun to be?
Jonny: "Most fun to be? Umm...
Thom: "At home actually.
Jonny: "Japan's nice, Boulder, Colorado was nice, it varies from city to city not country to country. Copenhagen was quite fun last year as I seem to remember.
DJ: "Now you're here at Roskilde pretty close to Norway, do you know if you'll be coming there?
Thom: "It's supposed to be cold down there.
DJ: "No it's summer there, it's the same temperature here, you could come you would survive I'm sure.
Thom: "It's winter down in New Zealand, we've just been there, that was pretty weird.
DJ: "You're new recording material, when will it be out in a record?
Jonny: "There'll be an EP in September and then an album some weeks later.
DJ: "Any titles or anything you can reveal to us?
Thom: "No, again the words have been a problem.
DJ: "Titles come last?
Thom: "Titles definitely come last...
DJ: "Okay
Thom: "Or first, it depends.
DJ: "From this EP, is there a song that's possible to perform here now?
Jonny: "We might have done one off them, we don't know yet.
Thom: "We're not really quite sure what is gonna be.
DJ: "Any old ones? Can you do one more song, do you think so?
Jonny: "Old ones... oh crikey. It's very hard for us, we’re only really used to electric guitars it's quite a challenge. A nice challenge.
Thom: "Challenge is one way of putting it.
Jonny: "Umm... crikey... Bulletproof?
Thom: "Yeah we could do a new actually just to annoy you.
DJ: "A new song? Not previously recorded?
Thom: "No this is one that's gonna be on the new album, hopefully. This is a song called Bulletproof.
[Play 'Bullet Proof..I Wish I Was']
Thom: "You can tell we just made that one up, can't you?
