RADIOHEAD — CREEP TOUR
Oct. 15, 1994 — MBK Hall
Concert Report

And finally, I got to see Radiohead, after listening to “Creep” for a year.
The general atmosphere of this concert couldn't help but remind me of The Manics concert, because it was held at the same venue and was another British band. The fans were almost entirely the same group, with many children and teenagers, and some people dressed in ways that really let their imaginations run wild. Especially the hairstyles — there were all kinds: punk styles, blondes, grey hair, and even quite a few skinheads in the Keanu style. The girls, too, were wearing all sorts of unusual outfits, including some that showed their navels.

At 7:30, the concert began with Modern Dog, our own Thai band. They certainly played with enthusiasm. The people standing at the front were dancing so hard that the floor was shaking. They played for about half an hour as the warm-up act.
Then the lights went out. The five members of Radiohead came onto the stage and opened with “You.” The audience screamed wildly, and the crowd at the front surged forward. Johnny stood looking at the audience with a very intense stare.

On the left-hand side, Colin stood towards the back, close to Phil, the drummer. Ed, the other guitarist, stood on the audience's left-hand side.
The next song was “Prove Yourself,” followed by two new songs, “Just” and “Banana.” The audience was fairly quiet during these because they didn't know the songs very well.
But when “Ripcord” began, everyone screamed. The whole crowd jumped up and down and clapped along enthusiastically.
Then came “Permanent,” a new song, followed by “Vegetable.” Thom held out the microphone to the audience and let them sing along, and they did a very good job.
After that they played another new song, “Killer Cars,” followed by the slow song “Punch Drunk,” during which the audience helped sing “Beautiful girl…” along with Thom.
Then came “How Do You.” The guitar was fantastic, and the audience jumped around and shook their heads throughout the song.

The band continued with the songs, taking a short break here and there. Then Thom announced that the next song would be “Creep.”
Naturally, the fans sang along with the song throughout the entire hall. When they reached the guitar part, Johnny played it in a way that made the audience scream even louder. The crowd was clearly enjoying themselves.

Next came the new single “My Iron Lung.” It was noticeable that Johnny occasionally looked up at the audience after having played for a long time without paying much attention to them.
The next songs were “Benz” and “Pop Is Dead.”
The concert continued smoothly, and there still wasn't a single person who had been carried out by the security guards after fainting. Radiohead played “Lurgee,” a slower song, giving everyone a chance to catch their breath before reaching the highlight, “Stop Whispering.” It was a very exciting number, with the audience dancing wildly and screaming at the top of their voices, particularly towards the end of the song.
Thom shouted:
“F…k You!”
and continued with “Anyone Can Play Guitar.”
Johnny went and stood beside the speaker cabinet for a while, then held his guitar out towards a security guard below the stage. The guard apparently didn't understand that Johnny was offering him the guitar, so he just stood there looking confused.
Johnny became annoyed, returned to the stage, shook the guitar around as before, and then threw the guitar down at the end of the song. Thom then said goodbye to the fans and went backstage.
The audience called for them to come back.

After a short while, Thom came back out carrying an acoustic guitar, in the style of a one-man show. He sang “Thinking About You,” followed by three new songs, before ending with “Blow Out” to everyone's delight.
The audience was having a great time. Thom joked:
“You're f king brilliant”
and also told them that they were the loudest audience in the world! He promised that they would come back again, and we hope that they really will.

In fact, they played songs from the album Pablo Honey, every song except one, “I Can't.” Some of the other songs they played were new singles, while some were completely new songs that had never been heard before. It is expected that they may be included on the new album.
It isn't often that you get to see a concert this good. They played live and it was really impressive just to watch them playing guitar, and that alone was worth it.

If anything has been left out of this concert report, I have to apologise here, because I was too busy watching the guitarists — Ed, Johnny and Thom — singing with such intensity.
Twenty-three songs and two shows in Thailand will surely satisfy Thai rock fans for a long time. Even though the audience was not as large as for The Manics, I believe that the fun and the impression it left were certainly no less.
If you're a Radiohead fan and didn't go to see them, there's only one thing to say:
What a pity, really.
